A BIG BIG THANK YOU to the Kinsmen Club of Terrace and the Skeena Valley Rotary Club! They made an official presentation to Dr. Strydom and the Northwest Therapeutic Equestrian Association of a fully equipped ‘Tack’ trailer. The saddles and equipment are unique and designed specifically for this training and therapy. We need to travel between various locations and keep the tack safe and secure. The Kinsmen saw this need and provided approximately $10,000 to purchase the unit. The Skeena Valley Rotary Club came up behind and supported the gift by providing a further $2,000 to deck out the interior of the trailer with shelving and racks for the saddles, harnesses, blankets and the variety of gear that accompanies the sessions.

“More Than Just a Pony Ride,” therapeutic riding is a unique program that uses horses as therapists. While learning riding and horsemanship skills, people with mental, emotional and/or physical disabilities gain a host of benefits. For anyone with a disability, equestrian activities can be a way to discover a whole new world of adventure, freedom, responsibility, dignity and excitement. It is also a way to improve concentration, balance, coordination and strengthen muscles. Most importantly, it provides an overwhelming sense of accomplishment for everyone involved – riders, volunteers, caregivers and instructors.
People may participate for a variety of reasons and in order to meet each rider’s individual needs their program is specifically designed for them. Lessons may include games, exercises, trail rides, riding instruction, or horsemanship skills such as grooming, leading, feeding etc.
The goal of the program is for the rider to be as independent as possible, however in some cases volunteers are there to assist in interpreting the instructor’s wishes and helping the rider carry them out. The level of this assistance is different for every rider depending on individual abilities.
